Berena Cabarcas graduated from Columbia College. She first joined the New York City Public High Schools in 1997 as a teacher at Manhattan International High School. In 2005, she was selected as the Principal of International Community High School, which opened in 2006 and is dedicated to recent immigrant teens new to English. Under her leadership, the school has increased access to computer science programming, internships, arts, as well as, developed accelerated English literacy programs for students entering with emerging grade level skills in their home language. The school continues to outperform New York State high school graduation rates for newcomers.
