Project Description
Mary Beck
Principal, Nicholas Senn High School
Chicago, Illinois
Fellow
Mary Beck is a veteran school leader proud to serve as the Principal of Nicholas Senn High School. Senn is an extremely culturally, racially and linguistically diverse neighborhood high school distinguished as Chicago’s first wall to wall IB school.
Principal Beck is dedicated to the growth of all members of the learning community, beginning her career as an English teacher, department chairperson, and basketball coach on Chicago’s west side. Here, she established a strong student-centered instructional philosophy and the ability to inspire students of all academic abilities, interests and backgrounds to prepare for college and career success.
At the district level, Mary spent several years training and supporting both elementary and high school teacher teams in postsecondary success through the AVID program development. It was through this experience that she honed her skills to build meaningful and trusting relationships, inspire adult learners, and promote systemic programs to support student success while navigating a variety of funding resources.
Now in her sixth year at Senn, Principal Beck has led an expansion of the IB Programme to ensure access and opportunity for all Senn students, while also advancing the audition-based Senn Arts program. As a result, Senn High School has seen a significant increase in enrollment, graduation rates, and college enrollment for all students.
