Principal, P.S. 184 Shuang Wen School
Manhattan, New York
Iris Y. Chiu has been the principal of Shuang Wen School (P.S./M.S. 184M) in New York City since July of 2011. Chiu took over the school during the hype of controversy from its previous administration, and successfully transformed the school from an English monolingual school to a two-way immersion Chinese English dual language school that service an increasing number of English Language Learners (ELL) and Students with Disabilities (SWD). Shuang Wen School has earned the “Reward School” recognition by New York State Department of Education five years in a row since 2013 for its high academic performance, and for its ability to close the achievement gaps for various student demographic groups. Chiu received her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from Iowa State University, and her M.S.in Education from Hunter College, CUNY.
