Kisa Humphrey

M-DCPS Principal, Kinloch Park Elementary

Miami, Florida

Fellow

Kisa Humphrey is a third-generation Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) educator. Kisa’s maternal grandmother, mother and paternal aunt instructed students across the district, each serving M-DCPS for over 35 years. She is the first in her family to become an M-DCPS principal. Pedagogical practices were modeled from birth in a dominant female household located in Liberty City. In July of 1995, her first M-DCPS position of media center aide began at a school she attended, Charles R. Drew Elementary.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida was conferred in May of 1998. Shortly after in August 1998, she obtained her first teaching position at Lorah Park Elementary. There she earned the “Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year” award in 2004.

Kisa continued professional growth by earning a Master’s degree in Reading Education, from Nova Southeastern University in October of 2001. Professional experiences encountered as a Curriculum Support Specialist of state-sanctioned schools sparked the drive to venture into the realm of Educational Leadership. Gratification derived from empowered stakeholders caused Ms. Humphrey to attain the position of assistant principal at Kinloch Park Elementary in July 2010. As an assistant principal, she observed and emulated effective administrative practices implemented by previous mentors. Five years later, she was promoted within the same site becoming the first African American principal of Kinloch Park Elementary. Determined to revolve her life around the appointment of principalship, an unexpected blissful blessing was presented. Her son was born in September 2016.

She also instilled moral building blocks upon which Mrs. Johnson’s commitment to education rests. The strong foundation she infused within Sheila to help others has been her motivation within the classroom. In passing their family values, Sheila’s daughter, also a product of M-DCPS, continues the legacy of helping others as a registered nurse.
